JADE DUST – “Wild Geese” LP

Jade Dust – “Wild Geese” LP

Portland, Oregon’s champions of ’80s DC-influenced melodic hardcore deliver eight more tracks on their second 12″ EP. Fans of Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Rain will recognize the inspiration right away. Less obvious is the band’s name which is derived from the Shudder To Think song “Jade Dust Eyes”. Because of the emo-angst and coarse, unpolished production (in a good way, I should add) this is an ideal record for anyone who still harbours an enthusiasm for the 90’s DIY scene that put out those hand-built, paper-bag sleeves in the peak years of Heartattack zine: Current, Floodgate, Moss Icon, Frail etc. Having said that, Jade Dust also fit alongside well-polished modern bands like Praise, One Step Closer and Fiddlehead.
” If you’re a fan of the late ’80s Dischord sound, you will love Jade Dust.” – M.R.R.

SOULSIDE – “A Brief Moment in the Sun” LP

Soulside – “A Brief Moment in the Sun” LP

Twelve new songs from one of the best Washington DC hardcore bands of all time, recently reformed and reactivated. Recorded in late 2021 by J. Robbins (with a little extra input from Ian MacKaye) at Magpie Cage Studio in Baltimore. I haven’t heard the entire album, just the three songs that are available on bandcamp – does it sound like Souside? as far as I can tell, yes absolutely…. a very natural progression from Hot Bodi Gram (even though that last album was 23 years ago!), and also an obvious continuation of what we heard on the recent This Ship 7″.
A Brief Moment in the Sun is a narrative LP, full of stories: some based on Bobby’s personal experiences and others addressing volatile socio-political themes, including an historical perspective on racial oppression in the United States. In both the music and the lyrics, this new album picks up where Soulside left off years ago—but with zero nostalgia in the mix.”

PAILHEAD – “Trait” LP

Pailhead – “Trait” LP

The complete recordings from the short-lived side project of Ministry’s Al Jourgensen and Dischord’s Ian MacKaye. The story goes, back in the late 1980s, while hanging-out and passing round the bong, Mackaye quipped “please don’t ask me. I will refuse”, to which Jourgensen sat-up, and said, “hey, great line! I’m going to use it in a Ministry song”. To which Mackaye responded “fuck it, why don’t we form our own band that combines Ministry and DC hardcore, and then we can use that line ourselves”… so they did, and it worked well, so much so that they released it as a 7”. Next-up, overcome by a shared enthusiasm for Killing Joke, the unlikely collaborators reunited for a further two 7″ releases, and all six songs are compiled here on this long-overdue reissue, but with the added bonus of a dub mix of “Stand In Line” as well as a brand new remix of “Man Should Surrender” – an extended version of the 12″ of Trait that was released in 1988 by Wax Trax.
I may have made-up the first part of this record’s description. But the rest is true – a highly improbable project, like some kind of fantasy band, combining Ministry’s industrial white noise, with Mackaye’s pre-Fugazi notions of post-hardcore; orchestrated as a homage to classic era Killing Joke… that almost surpasses classic era Killing Joke – for it is that good.

HAMMERED HULLS – “Careening” LP

Hammered Hulls – “Careening” LP

The debut full-length by Washington DC’s latest super group – combining the talents of Alec MacKaye (Faith, Ignition, Warmers), Mark Cisneros (Make Up, Medications), Mary Timony (Autoclave, Helium, Wild Flag), and Chris Wilson (Shake Ray Turbine, Titus Andronicus, Open City). Poignantly, this album is touted as being the very last recording to come out of the Inner Ear studio/warehouse. And what a very fine way for such an important institution to perform its final bow-out, with Hammered Hulls following-up their previous three track EP (2019) with twelve new tracks of taught, energetic, post punk fury, that will please anyone with more than a passing interest in the Inner Ear legacy. New 2023 press on white vinyl.

HOLY ROLLERS – “Toy” 7″

Holy Rollers – “Toy” 7″

One of the more active bands of the early ’90s D.C. underground. Two songs released in 1993, one of which appears on their self-titled/third album.

MEDICATIONS – “Completely Removed” LP

Medications – “Completely Removed” LP

Long-term musical partners, Devin Ocampo and Chad Molter reunited after the demise of Faraquet in 2000 to form Medications – continuing their melodic, groove-laden take on math rock. Later-on, at the time of the recording of this their second album (from 2010) they were joined by multi-instrumentalist Mark Cisneros (of Make Up and currently in Hammered Hulls). For people in the now, this is the connoisseur’s choice when it comes to the twiddly, post-hardcore/math-rock that was in circulation around the new millennium years (American Football, Algernon Cadwallader etc.)

LUNGFISH – “Indivisible” LP

Lungfish – “Indivisible” LP

There are twelve Lungfish albums out there, and this is their fifth, released originally in 1997, out of print since 2012, and now given a remastered repress on blue vinyl for 2022. Recorded and mixed at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia by Don Zientara. Sleeve layout by Jason Farrell.

JUPITER HEARTS – s/t LP

Jupiter Hearts – Self-titled 12″ EP

A new band re-showcasing the instantly recognisable vocal skills of Rob Pennington, who you’ll know from Endpoint, By The Grace Of God and Black Cross. Relocating from Louisville, Kentucky to Charlotte, North Carolina, teaming-up with members of Triple Threat, Late Bloomer and Scout. Getting to the point, the end result doesn’t need much explanation, listen for yourself and you will instantly acknowledge the Dischord influences. Not dissimilar to the tempo and vibe of Hammered Hulls, with an added enthusiasm for a decent melody that brings to mind Three. I take great solace from the fact that this elder statesman of the hardcore scene still has the integrity, skills and credibility to keep things moving forward, combined with a well judged appreciation of the past.

BENT BLUE – “Where Do Ripples Go?” LP

Bent Blue  – “Where Do Ripples Go?” 12″ EP

The debut EP by an exciting new hardcore outfit from from San Diego, California. This one threw me, and in a good way. The first few seconds, I’m thinking, hmm, ok, a good quality version of Lifetime/kid Dynamite… but, I’ve heard that done before. And then, oowh, this records takes off in whole new directions, something of a revelation, and it is bang-on. Dischord seeps into their range of influences like a mainlined detox at the health farm. Which draws immediate sonic connections to Praise and Fiddlehead. Pumped-up and re-energised with modern hardcore youthfulness, despite re-inventing the spirit of Jawbox, Blue Tip, Fugazi, these guys totally own their individual sound and style. Is San Diego the location for a new Revolution Summer? Exciting idea…

VOID – Condensed Flesh 7″

Void – Condensed Flesh 7″

A repress of the demo session recorded in 1981 at Inner Ear Studio, produced by Ian MacKaye and engineered by Don Zientara. The demo had 12 songs, of which three were used for the Flex Your Head compilation album, released by Dischord in 1982 (one song, “Get Out Of My Way”, appeared on the Fountain of Youth compilation LP of 1984, Bouncing Babies). This is the 30th anniversary repress of the vinyl version that Eye 95 Records released in 1992. Now available as gold vinyl with a green label  in honour of the Irish heritage of late Void drummer Sean Finnegan.
