RED HARE – “Little Acts Of Destruction” LP

Red Hare – “Little Acts Of Destruction” LP

Their second album, a joint effort with Dischord and their own label Hellfire. The album was recorded and mixed by longtime collaborator and friend J. Robbins. Red Hare are a continuation of the Swiz/Sweet Belly Freakdown/Blue Tip legacy, and this incarnation features the same line up but with the addition of an ex Garden Variety member on drums. Sounds like Drive Like Jehu meets early Dag Nasty…

YOUTH BRIGADE – “Complete First Demo” 7″

Youth Brigade – “Complete First Demo” 7″

Formed by two members of the Teen Idles after they split-up in 1980, (and joined by one of the Untouchables), Complete First Demo collects eights songs that Youth Brigade recorded with Don Zientara and Skip Groff in the summer of 1981 during the first recording session. I Object appeared on the 20 Years Of Dischord box set and Last Word was included on Flex Your Head. All other material is previously unreleased.

CRUCIFIX – s/t (12″ EP) LP

 Crucifix – self-titled 12″ EP

Repress of the first recording by the legendary San Francisco band that pioneered the American ‘peace punk’ sound of the early 1980s (along with MDC and, later, Christ On Parade). This long out of print 5 track EP was recorded in 1981, and originally released on Universal Records. While not quite the powerhouse of Discharge influenced hardcore fury that they were to later unleash on their full-length Dehumanization of 1983, this 12″ is closer in spirit to the early Dischord 7″s. It’s an expensive reissue but does at least provide an opportunity to grab yourself an essential piece of American punk history that would otherwise be near-impossible to get hold-of.

TEEN IDLES – “Anniversary” 7″

Teen Idles – “Anniversary” 7″

Songs taken from practice tapes and early demos recorded from late 1979 to mid-1980. It has two tracks that the Teen Idles later re-recorded for their Minor Disturbance 7″, as well as 3 that are previously unreleased. A must have for any true fan of harDCore, pre-Minor Threat etc.

SHUDDER TO THINK – “Ten-Spot” LP

Shudder To Think – “Ten-Spot” LP

Shudder to Think’s second full-length album, (and their first on Dischord), originally released in 1990. This pressing of Ten Spot has been remastered from the original tapes. The artwork has been revised courtesy of Heather Hendrix Russell. Fans of Revolution Summer/Dischord already know this album, but also recommended for fans of mid 90’s emo like Sunny Day Real Estate and Elliot. Shudder To Think were pioneers, introducing a very welcome feminine and abstract quality into the 80’s hardcore formula. The fact that the band had ties to Jeff Buckley is a pretty solid indication that their scope was a bit broader than most.

RITES OF SPRING – “End On End” LP

Rites Of Spring – “End On End” LP

Original recorded February 1985 at Inner Ear Studios. With its intense emotional self reflection this album single-handedly brought to an end the macho posturing that had become so prevalent within the worldwide hardcore punk scene at that point. A ground breaking band, they were also essential players within the swell of energy, referred to as “Revolution Summer”, that swept over the D.C. scene in 1985. Pre One Last Wish, Happy Go Licky, and Fugazi!

MINOR THREAT – s/t LP

Minor Threat – self-titled  12″ EP

Remastered and recut in November 2008 at Chicago Mastering Service. Tracks 1-8 are from the first, self-titled, Minor Threat 7″. Tracks 9-12 are from the In My Eyes 7″. This is the new pressing for 2023, with a grey sleeve (metallic ink text), pressed on silver vinyl, and plays at 45 rpm.

FAITH / VOID – split LP

Faith / Void – split  LP

To quote Tim Yohannan, former overlord of MRR, this is the classic “Faith and Void LP” (a subtle distinction, but I like it). I’m more of a Faith fan than a Void fan. Each their own. Both represent ’80s DC hardcore at its finest. Remastered and recut at Chicago Mastering Service in November 2008, originally recorded and released by Dischord Records back in ’82. So where were you in ’82?

DAG NASTY – “Can I Say” LP

Dag Nasty – “Can I Say” LP

The debut album from 1986 by the outfit that forged a new, more melodic and, dare I say it, emotional approach to the hardcore formula that was originally shaped by their older peers from the Washington DC scene (Faith, Minor Threat, Scream, Government Issue and SOA). Trying to recall all the bands with connections to Dag Nasty is a list that just goes on and on… Bad Religion, Minor Threat, G.I.,  DYS, Down By Law, etc etc… By no means the best Dag Nasty recording, but certainly their most popular.
