Squid – “Bright Green Field” LP
A new Brighton band, now based in London, who have been active since 2017, and this is their break-through debut album. A sound that, to their credit, is vary hard to pin down and define. But use of the term ‘post-punk’ is inevitable, as indeed is ‘indie-rock’, but not in the overly-polite, landfill sense of the word… this is evening 6Music, rather than daytime, if you get my drift….
Squid are unafraid to utilise aggression, electric volume, funky dance grooves, and experimental freedom as and when required. And for description’s sake, you’ll end-up referencing older bands like Talking Heads, XTC, Neu! and Wire; while the vocalist often bares a similarity to the dude from LCD Sound System. Maybe it’s a Brighton connection, because an Electrelane comparison feels relevant as well.
