Rudimentary Peni – “Death Church” LP
A fantastic repress of this classic recording by the Hertfordshire trio of outsider punks that was originally released in 1983. It was often the case back in the day that a record released on the Crass label might leave you a little perplexed, let down even, but less so with their off-shoot label, Corpus Christie, because they released some total bloody bangers: Crucifix, Omega Tribe, Conflict, Alternative, and most of all Rudimentary Peni’s Death Church. Hats off to Sealed Records – a perfect reprint of the full, fold-out poster sleeve, with all the essential sharpness and fine detail of the obsessively hand-drawn original artwork perfectly reproduced. The music is still as timelessly sublime too, of course. Providing a template for simplicity, brevity, weirdness, catchiness, obsessiveness (etc.) that many hundreds (thousands?) have followed since. And yet no one has ever managed to replicate that unique dark magic that was the original Peni. True one offs. An album that the whole family – mums, dads and kids – can all gather around the grampahone and enjoy once again.
