PUP – “The Unraveling of Puptheband” LP
Along with Jeff Rosenstock, Toronto’s PUP (an abbreviation of Pathetic Use of Potential) are keeping alive melodic punk rock/pop-punk that is both credible and insanely catchy. The secret lies within the boundless high-spirited energy, combined with the richness of the ‘this is my sorry life’ song-writing – by turns honest, dark, funny, tragic, and moving. For their fourth full-length pianos, synths, and horns have been added for the first time, but as far as I can tell, this is still instantly recognisable PUP – anthemic tunes with the ramshackle looseness of Titus Adronicus, the bouncey joy of early Superchunk, and the emo introspection of The Hotelier.
