Prolapse –  “Pointless Walks to Dismal Places” Double LP

The the debut album by the Leicester indie band of the 1990s, it was originally released in 1994 on Cherry Red Records. A mix of MBV shoegaze, Sonic Youth style disonance, and angry, leftfield post-punk. A deluxe reissue, remastered and with additional tracks taken from their first three EPs, including a 16 page full colour booklet. A band that slipped under my radar during a decade when UK indie was best avoided at all costs. Thankfully, Prolapse were the antithesis of Brit pop. Pope John Peel blessed them with sessions (but I, for my sins, had ceased going to late night radio one church in them days), NME rated them too. But what really set them apart and made them remarkable (even more so thirty years later) was the incendiary vocal trade-off – where Linda Steelyard would no doubt have happily opted for a gentle, soothing Stereolab style (which she could do exceptionally well) instead is repeatedly challenged by the manic interruptions of Mick Derrick – who aggressively shouts in a thick Scottish accent like he has just stepped down from fronting anarcho punkers The Alternative (and I’ve just read in a band bio that he was indeed greatly influenced by Crass. And played in Dawson, even). The end result is mad, dynamic, and utterly captivating.
