Militarie Gun – “Life Under the Gun” LP
The debut full-length album from the American West Coast post-hardcore band fronted by the vocalist of power violence project Regional Justice Center and backed by members of Drug Church and Modern Color. Still immediately recognisable as Militarie Gun – one of the most exciting new bands to have emerged from the American underground in recent years – but this is also a definite progression in sound, with Ian Shelton’s distinct, aggressive bark softening to the point of melodic singing, (taking a cue from High Vis, I reckon). And all round, the pop has been pushed to the forefront, losing some of the cool dynamic of the melodic indie rock contrasted with super-angry shouting, which has always been a large part of the band’s appeal, at least for me. But the tunes are still great, huge in fact, and if you didn’t mind the change of direction that, say, Culture Abuse, or Angel Dust have previously taken in their later/recent years then you’ll be more than alright with this album.
