Drug Church – “Cheer” LP
A momentous album on which to end the year, and a great start to 2019. Drug Church’s third full-length (I’m counting the Swell 12″ of 2015 as a mini-LP rather than a full-length) finds them in new upgraded and updated territories. The bouncy-heaviness of 90s-hardcore-meets-90s-alternative-rock is still up-front and leading the way, but, perhaps because of increased studio budget, (or they’ve just learnt new tricks), this has far more of contemporary vibe, and a poppier edge. Not a million miles from Culture Abuse (pre-Epitaph). A crossover into the broader music world seems inevitable, but with the sardonic smart-arse lyrics of Patrick Kindlon still as wonderful and life-afirming as ever, mainstream success will only make the world a better place. The people need this.
