Gray Matter – “Take It Back” LP
The new wave of DC hardcore that arrived in the mid to late 80’s might not hold as much of an interest for money-minded record collectors as the first half does, but – and maybe it’s my age/generation – it’s the second wave (often referred to as the Revoltion Summer) where the real musical treasure lie. And not least Take It Back. Is this my favourite Dischord release ever? It’s a close call – nudge aside Soulside, Rites Of Spring and Ignition – and yes, it is. This version has been re-cut, re-issued and extended: as well as the 6 track 12″ from 1986 this LP now includes four extra tracks from their double 7″ from 1991 (from when they reformed). As is so often the case with DC bands, members played in numerous other local acts, including in this instance Severin, Three, Iron Cross and Ignition. Singer Geoff Turner has since made a significant name for himself as a producer, working with, amongst others (and for his sins), The Foo Fighters.
