Fela Ransome Kuti & The Africa 70* – “Music Of Fela – Roforofo Fight” LP
One of the earlier recordings by the Afrobeat star and revolutionary human rights activist. Roforofo Fight, released in 1972, is somewhere around his seventh album (out of 77!), and it’s a pretty good starting point for exploring the world of Fela Kuti for the first time. The wild African beats and Western jazz influence are on full heat, and the simmering rage and awakening activism is instantly tangible within the opening rhythms, “…the cusp of evolving from a rebel-cum-playboy to a rebel with a cause”…less of the political diatribes that occur in the the later recordings, and instead, more metaphor-laden social observations, spiced-up with some juicy profanities and wholesome expletives in the Nigerian pidgin dialect.
