Fela Kuti and the Afrika 70- “Zombie” LP
Studio album by the agitational Nigerian Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti. There are so many Fela LPs to choose from, but Zombie is repeatedly held up as one of his best, and if you are new to him it’s as good a place as any to start from. Recorded in 1977 – but you’d be stretching things to call it a punk album. In many respects it far outdoes the anti-establishement rebeliousness of 77 punk. Johnny Rotten might have been roughed-up by teddy boys in an alleyway; Felu Kuti was terrorised, brutalised and hospitalised by government thugs on more than one occassion. Zombi was so critical of the Nigerian government that it is thought to have resulted in the murder of Kuti’s mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and the violent destruction of his commune by the military. More than music? You betcha.
