Exhalants – “Atonement” LP
A noise rock trio that combine the chunky roar of Unsane and Engine Kid and the more calibrated (and comparatively calmer) moments of Rodan and Unwound. Atonement is their 2020 follow-up album to their self-titled debut of 2018. Based in Austin, Texas, Exhalants are also direct descendants of the oddball noise rock bands – Ed Hall, Crust, Cherubs – that released records on the Trance Syndicate label that was run by Butthole Surfer’s drummer King Coffey. An important tradition, I’m very glad that it continues. “With a mountain of amps, precision pounding drums, eardrum-rattling feedback, and a healthy dose of experimentation Exhalants are easily one of the more exciting newer bands to gain attention within the punk/noise rock arena in recent memory”… true enough, and if you have an interest in noise rock, tempered with a little post-rock, this is damn-damn essential.
