DRIN – “Today My Friend You Drunk The Venom” LP

A band centred around one creative fella, Dylan McCartney, joined by some companions from bands such as Corker, Crime of Passing, the Serfs and Fruit Loops. Which doesn’t mean anything to me, but nonetheless, I’m digging the way the hard-edged motorik beats are propelling forward some interesting experimental sounds: punky dub reggae with lo-fi leftfield indie and garagey punk. I guess this could fit in with the mysterious world of Thee Oh Sees (mysterious to me as I can never crack ’em). Likened also to early Joy Division, but, thankfully, without the Mancunian gloom. Sometimes you want to be challenged. But the challenge ultimately needs a decent pay-off to be worth its time. And The Drin score high on both counts.
