American Culture – “Hey Brother, It’s Been A While” LP
The second full-length album for this American indie/art-rock band. Great band name, also a slightly ironic one due to the heavy influence the band have taken from UK indie music. The Fall, MBV, Stone Roses, Spiritualized come to mind, there are probably heaps more… from their own side of the Atlantic, Meat Puppets and Replacements also get a mention… it’s hard to be certain with this record, which I guess you’d call a slow burner, revealing qualities piece by piece, and first impressions here are definitely deceptive. Slightly psychedelic, a bit lo-fi, a bit stoner, sometimes punk, sometimes alternative rock… but it all holds together in a cohesive whole and enriched with some powerful emotional narrative within the vocals/lyrics. Something like a mix of Nothing, Culture Abuse and Militarie Gun’s more psychedelic pop moments.
