Bowery Electric – Self-titled Double LP
A repress of the first album by the enigmatic New York duo who were active in the 1990s. This debut full-length originally came out in 1995. Since then their records have picked a mythological status, maybe even a cult-like following. Thirteen tracks of bass-lead trancey dream pop – four of which have been added to this repress, taken from their debut EP, Drop – with light, breathy vocals, shimmering from start to finish, and all propelled by slow, dry snare hits. They were absolutely a product of their time, nestling between Mowax and trip hop records on one side and the Constellation/Kranky/Quarterstick post rock on the other. I’m not going to mention shoegaze, but, yes, this is somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and Boards Of Canada. There may well have been a few messy nights out during that decade for which Bowery Electric provided the perfect soundtrack to an early morning come-down. Me? yeah, absolutely.
