The title says pretty much all you need to know – second in this series, a comprehensive selection from the battalions of underground freaks that forged the proto-metal and proto-punk sounds of the late sixties/early seventies, collectively inspired by the success of Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Pretty Things etc. no doubt. Some obvious choices: The Move, Red Dirt, The Deviants, Budgie, Leaf Hound, Stray, Jeff Beck, Atomic Rooster, Edgar Broughton Band, and then dozens more all worthy of exploration (such as High Tides‘ rifftastic “Futilist’s Lament” – the birth of heavy metal!!). With tracks taken from albums, B-sides and quite a few that are previously unreleased (fifty three tracks in total). Compiled on three CDs and housed with a 40 page booklet in a clamshell cardboard box.
