Modern garage punk with a sprinkle of dirt and grit. By modern I mean punk rock that is true to the formula of garage as we’ve always known it – loose, scrappy, retro and lo-fi – but crucially, from neu-youth who spent their formative years slurpping in the trough of DIY hardcore. The 2017 self-titled debut album by Stiff Richards, originally released on their own Stiff Records, is Detroit by way of Australia – Stooges to Coloured Balls to Radio Birdman. And with tunes like fellow countrymen Royal Headache, only, a little more ballsy and brash, with the garage punk rubbing-up against some (Aussie) hard rock.
