Sonic Youth – “Goo” LP
The Geffen/major label debut, two years after the masterpiece that was their fifth album, 1988’s Daydream Nation. Not an easy album to follow-up, so the band opted to spend five times the studio budget, and they also repositioned themselves, away from the art-rock-punk underground of the previous ten years, firmly into the ‘just gimmie indie rock’ alternative-mainstream. Lost ’em a fair few old fans, myself included, but, I’ll admit, true to the previous albums, each song stands out strong in its own right, and despite the commercial hookiness, the innovative Sonic Youth magic remains. Rightly considered to be one of the best albums of the 1990’s.
