Pixies – “Trompe Le Monde” LP
Released in 1991, their final album before their break-up. Aside from being, like every other Pixies recording, a great selection of top-level indie pop tunes, this album is also notable for a pretty ripe cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On”; an old song, “Subbacultcha”, recycled from their early years; plus some rowdy moments that re-emphasised their shared punk DNA, taking the levels of energy and aggression up to something close to hardcore. On a down side, there is less of Kim Deal’s vocal presence to be heard on this album (the disharmony that caused the future split was perhaps already simmering). Despite which, I rate this as one of their best.
