Moss Icon – “Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly: Anniversary Edition” LP

A repress of the one and only full-length album by the Maryland post-punk/hardcore innovators. It was recorded throughout 1988 at the peak era of their on/off existence, not long after their first two 7″s, but it was not released until mid-1994, three years after the band’s break-up, by Vermiform Records. Like their neighbours The Hated, the original Moss Icon were a wild explosion of emotion and loose, unhinged intensity, in a similar vein to  Gray Matter and Rites Of Spring. Maybe Moss Icon were under the influence of Honor Role’s Rictus album, because by the time of this recording their sound was moving into new directions of mid-tempo restraint, peppered with lots of spoken word passages; a distinct brand of post-hardcore/emo invention that became a huge influence on bands such as Bob Tilton, Still Life, Current, Indian Summer, etc.
The artwork has been fully restored and includes previously unpublished photos that were inadvertently missing from the original release (back in the day, Tonie Joy was too tied-up with Universal Order Of Armageddon to give Lyburnum the time and work that was required). Remastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music, the vinyl has been newly cut by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service, and pressed onto audiophile-grade vinyl at RTI.
