Kukl – “Holidays In Europe (The Naughty Nought)” LP
The second and last studio album by the Icelandic post-punk group Kukl, released in 1986 by Crass Records. A band that were experimental and challenging at times, but unlike their later incarnation as the Sugarcubes, the punk influence in Kukl makes for a far more pumped-up and exciting listening experience, and one that still sounds remarkably fresh and innovative today. And one of the few occasions where Penny Rimbaud’s production skills are less of an interference; and more of an enhancement. At a time when the interest in early 80s post punk is at saturation point, curious-minded music fans should seek out the unique, other-worldliness of these Northern Hemisphere nutters. Reykjavík, surely, is another planet.
