Jesu – “Never” 12″ EP
The unstoppable creative force that is Justin K Broadrick continues to explore the esoteric fringes of pop music, where dreamy meets heavy – the place where mid-life crisis never sounded so beautiful. For me, the 12″ EPs by Roderick’s Jesu have always provided the best tracks. I’m thinking of the older Heart Ache and Silver EPs especially. Which is exactly what this latest release – an immediate follow-up to 2020’s Terminus LP – reminds me of. At 30 minutes in length, this stretches the notion of what an extended play 12″ actually is, rather than regular long-player album, so maybe think of Never as the slightly more electronic and experimental sister/brother to Terminus. Spacey vocal melodies hovering over pulses of dubby beats and washes of shimmering electonica; with songs, in that distinct Jesu fashion, that balance between the contrasting dynamics of gentle melancholia and the suffocating crush of huge, low-end guitars. Pop genuis.
