Description

Genogeist  – “Technophobia” 7″

Four brand new rippers from the PDX (Portland Oregon) blackened punks, and a follow-up to the full-length from 2019. Japanese and UK hardcore of the 1980’s jostle between themselves to provide the strongest influence – and I reckon the UK influence wins-out because almost instantly my brain registers Antisect (Out From The Void), very early Heresy, Sacrilege (circa the first LP), Ripper Crust period Hellbastard, plus (the under appreciated) Life Cycle. Like an Earache/Peaceville flexi compilation re-lived 35 years later. Polished-up on the production values, but thankfully, only a little bit – every polish on a stenchy dirtcore release like this removes a layer of what makes it so damn special… ok, I say that as someone who listened to this stuff first time around…. maybe if your introduction to grindy, metallic crust punk is via Relapse or Southern Lord Records you might have a different take on these values….But, tinged with a mid-80’s’ tape-trading* standard of rough, raw and murky, I think this sounds absolutely spot on. (* with a photocopied insert, natch). I would also speculate that New York’s Nausea provide an influence too, especially when the backing vocals of Natanya from Terminal Conquest kick-in.
