Fine Day – “January” CD

This is a gem for collectors and purveyors of early 90’s emo/post hardcore, a CD that was released by Sally and Isaac of Spread Records/distro in 1999, with copies, thankfully, having been recently re-discovered in a box in a cupboard, as you do. Fine Day were a Maryland band who were active for four years from 1989 onwards, inspired by the Revolution Summer/Positive Force activities of neighbouring Washington DC, one among many young bands who followed in the ‘after hardcore’ explosion that was spearheaded by Soulside, Jawbox and Fugazi (plus, in other corners of America, Fuel and Quicksand). Five tracks were recorded in 1993 and were never released – this CD complies them together with the earlier two tracks from the excellent 7″ from the year before released by Sunspot Records. To find a Sunspot release in a distro box back in the da was to find precious treasure – Avail, 1.6 Band, Shades Apart – and it’s those two tracks from the ’92 7″ that makes this an essential archival find.
Fine Day toured with Junction, and, after splitting-up, members went on to form Hoover and Most Secret Method.
