Farside – “Monroe Doctrine” LP
The third of Farside’s albums, released in 1999. It continued their distinct mixture of late-’80s melodic hardcore (Husker Du, Lemonheads, Big Drill Car, and the Descendants), combined with the chunkier, drug-free energy that was shared with the majority of their labelmates on Revelation. They were serious-minded, especially in comparison to the cartoon geekiness that dominated the poppier end of punk in those day (i.e. every record on Fat Wreck); and often with a touch of pathos – they had such a great way of turning melancholy and heart-break into a intoxicatingly wicked tune. This is the 2015 red vinyl pressing (at 2015 price).
