Extreme Noise Terror – “A Holocaust In Your Head” LP

The debut album by the Ipswich crust punk/grindcore pioneers. Released in 1989 – the one and only release on Head Eruptions Records, a label that consequently disappeared and later remerged as Domino Records. It was tough being into UK hardcore in the late 80s – stellar debut releases where often followed-up by comparative disappointments that failed to ignite the same thrill.  Concrete Sox never bettered Your Turn Next; Napalm Death never bettered Scum (side one); for my money the Electro Hippies never bettered the split 12″ with Generic; and Heresy, well enough said… The same with ENT: after the aptly named Earslaughter split LP with Chaos UK, (followed by the John Peel sessions) foundations had been laid for this full-length to become a huge, landmark record – ideally, able to match Antisect or Anti-Cimex. Alas, all we got was anti-climax instead. As often was the case, low production values were partly to blame – who had money back then? No bugger, that’s for sure (and those BBC royalty payments? Straight down the pub with ’em). Losing the phenomenal drumming skills of Mick Harris just before recording started for Holocaust In Your Head was a massive set back too, despite Stick from Doom stepping-in last minute. The later 12″, Phonophobia, delivered everything this album should have been, but still, none the less, an important record by an important band, kept in press on the Italian label, Radioactive, and now including a huge poster.
