Drug Church – “Hygiene” LP
Relocating from Albany, New York, to Los Angeles, CA, the Drug Church fearlessly march on, over ten years down the line, with their fourth full-length album. What started out as a side project to Self Defense Family has consequently galloped ahead to become its own first division band within modern alternative/underground rock. Some of the 90’s flavoured chuggy hardcore of the early releases remains, but with Hygiene things have opened-up much more – expanding on the 90s alternative rock that flavoured their mid period (Swell and Hit Your Head), and becoming more anthemic and tuneful (I’m thinking Iron Chic at certain moments. Almost to the extent of Hold Steady… but not quite. The hardcore grit still remains), and, as always, topped by the pithy one liners of Patrick Kindlon as he insightfully grapples with the anxieties and pressures of modern day adult life.
