Civic – “Taken By Force” LP
The second studio album from this Melbourne-based five-piece. Civic look like a gang of hard’uns that would think nothing of beating you up. Not all of them, mind – at least one of them looks like they would merely watch from the side-lines. And they would enjoy it. It’s an Australian thing, maybe (Civic are very Australian). That aside, these ugly hooligans deliver their gritty garage punk – timeless in a way that proceeds notions of ’77 punk – with a distinct under-grundy of pop melody, which makes you wonder if you misjudged their appearance, and that really they would show some non-violent mercy. Probably not…
