Description

Chisel – “Set You Free” Double LP

After playing in a bunch of very cool New York hardcore bands in the early 1990’s – Citizen’s Arrest, Hell No, Animal Crackers and Puszzlehead – Tim Leo settled down, as you do, to write some mod-inflected pop-punk tunes for his main project, Chisel. After a handful of releases all released on Gern Blandsten Records came the 1997 album, Set You Free. Carrying an influence that seemed to owe a great deal to 60’s pop, and also some of the less insufferable UK indie bands, like early Manic Street Preachers and Supergrass, of the Brit-pop era – which might not sound like a particularly enticing proposition, but powered with post hardcore energy and a knack for writing super-memorable songs, Chisel were way better than those bands that they (may have) aped. Keep in mind, Chisel came with the tag “ex-Citizen’s Arrest“. (It makes even more sense when you consider that Jets To Brazil were active at the same point in time).
This deluxe 25th anniversary remastered edition supplements the original’s 17-song track list with five unheard tracks, plus a booklet of lyrics, photos, and an essay by Jes Skolnik.
