Bright Eyes – “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” LP
The American singer-songwriter Conor Oberst teamed-up with another posse of collaborators drawn primarily from Omaha’s indie music scene for this sixth studio album, initially released by Saddle Creek Records in 2005. Including, I have just discovered, a member of 90’s Gravity/emo band Evergreen (thanks Discogs!). Americana indie folk with in an undercurrent of punk subversive-ness (most of all in the subtle social satire of the lyrics, but also in the album’s kick ass finale, “Road To Joy”). Receiving widespread acclaim and critical praise on its original release – “An album with the simmering glow of a masterpiece.” according to the LA Times – like, say, the albums of Elliott Smith, blessed with a timelessness that makes for a great listen nearly twenty years later.
