Slayer – “South Of Heaven” LP
A heavy metal classic, released in 1988, their fourth studio album and their final release for Def Jam before following label head Rick Rubin to his new label, Def America. Received with slightly less enthusiasm than the preceding album, Reign In Blood. Speed was everything back in the mid-to-late 80’s. South Of Heaven was slower, but also more considered, featuring a higher level of song writing (consider “Crooked Cross”), and lyrics that were a lot less cheesy than before (albeit morally ambiguous), all-in-all making this the Slayer album that has perhaps aged better than any of the other 80’s albums.
