Scowl – “Psychic Dance Routine” 12″ EP
The hard working Santa Cruz hardcore band that have been on the receiving-end of heaps of attention since the release in 2021 of their first full-length, How Flowers Grow. Is it deserved? on the whole, yes, believe the hype. For this five track mini-album Scowl continue to push the boundaries of their sound, this is exactly what the guys at Axe To Grind podcast mean when they refer to ‘adjacent hardcore’ (the podcast that is ‘adjacent smart’) – sure, the bands collective DNA is absolutely hardcore punk, but Scowl are now more firmly placed in a new, more-melodic, style of alt rock (I want to reference Babes In Toyland and L7… but I don’t know if that would act a helpful indicator…). And this suits frontperson Kat Moss loads more – she has a superb singing voice which has now been given full reign to let rip. I don’t mind that there is less of the growly-scream of the hardcore version of Scowl, ’cause this new version sounds better.
