Rudimentary Peni – “Wilfred Owen” 7″
A hard one to wrap your head around – afterall, Rudimentary Peni must be in the all-time top five bands for anyone and everyone who got into punk rock at any point in time from ’79 onwards. And so it goes, the first time on vinyl for a track that was previously only available as a one track CD single which accompanied a book by Nick Blinko from 2009 called The Haunted Head. A minimal song, with Blinko reciting the words of Wilfred Edward Salter Owen (1893-1918) about the fortunes of five British ‘Tommies’ during the first World War. And its a bit of a tease – feeling more like the opening track for what historically would have been a full EP brimming with as many tracks as could be squeezed onto a 45. It’s no Farce…. But it is Nick Blinko. And anything that this man applies his uniquely creative mind to is worth investigating and exploring (he is one of his generation’s best, I’d say)…
