High Tide – “Sea Shanties” LP

Released in late 1969, a landmark album in the history of heavy music, Sea Shanties  acted as bridge beween the first two Blue Cheer albums and the first Black Sabbath album. Hight Tide were part of the notorious Ladbroke Grove scene of the late 60s (Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, Deviants etc.), formed by Tony Hill (fresh from playing  with The Misunderstood) they fused the inventiveness and drama of the Doors with the  wild electricity of Hendrix, and almost accidently birthed heavy metal in the process. With a brutish guitar tone, way more distorted, frenzied and downtuned than any had dare to try before, they were pure doom invention. Pre-proggines also abounds, especially with Simon House’s electronic violin screeching all over the place (he later joined Hawkwind and then later, played with David Bowie). A fantastic, year zero album, essential for fans of Sabbath, Deep Purple, Sir Lord Baltimore, Blue Cheer, Groundhogs, Toad, Josefus, Leaf Hound etc. Remastered from the original Liberty master tapes and cut at Abbey Road Studios.
