Mil-Spec – “Marathon” LP
For their second full-length, Ontario, Canada’s Mil-Spec collaborated with Title Fight’s Ned Russin to produce ten songs of hardcore packed with melody and feeling. For someone old school like me (aka middle-aged duffer) this balances perfectly between Reason To Believe and Chain Of Strength. While a more modern, and probably more helpful comparison would be with Have Heart, One Step Closer, Wild Side, Praise and Fury. One of those records that makes you ponder: not only is this great…but also, by golly, it could also be considered a future classic. Featuring a six minute instrumental track – inspired by Arab Strap’s “First Big Weekend” – where Sophie Vallée, wife of singer Andrew Peden, recites a monologue about the time that the band drove to Dallas to play with Power Trip, seeing the late Riley Gale for what turned out to be the last time.
