Lords Of Chaos: The Bloody Rise Of The Satanic Metal Underground, New Edition
By Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind
A journalistic account of the early Norwegian black metal scene, with a focus on the string of church burnings and murders that occurred in the country around 1993 (Mayhem, and all those other fucktards). Originally published in 1998, a second, revised edition was released in 2003 and expands the original book by fifty pages. Although it it insightful and interesting (the authors understand the subject matter), this book is a bit morally ambiguous, neither sympathetic or unsympathetic, which is a bit concerning, considering this is a study of immature facists/murderers; but at the same time, it is free of exploitative sensationalism and music-journo inaccuracies. And Varg Vikernes doesn’t like it, so that has got to be good.
