Red Dirt – Self-titled LP

A hard rocking psyche-blues band formed in Kingston upon Hull around 1968. This self-titled album was released on Fontana in 1970. An underground gem by a relatively obscure band, to be found by the lucky few back in the day gigging with the likes of Wishbone Ash and Mott The Hoople. Not even recognised as second (or third) division Led Zeppelin – Why? The answer is simple: Red Dirt were too hard, dirty, heavy, and basically, just way too ahead of their time to sit comfortable with long haired audiences of the late 60s and early 70s. Making them perfect for rediscovery fifty years later, especially if you get the pleasures from digging up old Beefheart, Groundhogs, Leafhound, Stackwaddy (etc.) records. Repressed for 2024 ( You would be paying nearly £3000 for an 1970 original!) as a double album that includes 11 extra tracks taken from other recording sessions, including five songs from a unreleased second album recorded in 1971 (less blues; more prog). The rear sleeve credits Barney Bubble’s Notting Hill based company, Teenburger, for the eye catching sleeve art – a classic design that was later reinvented for the Advert’s One Chord Wonders 7″.
