Gimic – “Defer To Hate” 7″
The debut vinyl release for this Bristol band who are leaping forward, progressing by the day/weeks, like eager young puppies with mischievous intent. I was trying to figure out who Gimic remind me of, and the answer came to me: The Fisticuffs Bluff – which is not overly helpful, they were yonks ago, and not many folk knew of them back then, (but I expect their album on Troubleman Unlimited is very worthy of a dust off). The sound of Gimic is fraught and tense, undercut with a melodic flourish or two on the guitars (clean guitars that is, like latter-era screamo, and kind of reminiscent of At The Drive In); pushed along by frenetic basslines that, if it wasn’t for the fast paced speed, sound like they want to break-out into Minutemen-esque grooves – again, its another feature that reminds me of the crazy-hardcore that was knocking around in the early/mid 90s, pre-screamo. So, overall, in a short while this band will probably blow-up to become pretty huge, making this an essential limited 7″ to own (quick, not many to be had).
