Funkadelic – “Free Your Mind… and Your Ass Will Follow” LP
The recording of the second album – in Detroit, in the year of 1970 – by this funk rock super-group coincided with the band’s shared enthusiasm for the recently discovered drug LSD. George Clinton described it as an attempt to “see if we can cut a whole album while we’re all tripping on acid.” Resulting in an album that is a cult favourite amongst cosmic heads… and that is also a confusing mess of self indulgence. It’s prime early 70’s Funkadelic, so they got away with it, and it still sounds fantastic. Made Jimi Hendrix sound like a lightweight by comparison.
