Warish – “Down in Flames” LP
Blown-out scuzz rock that has been rode hard and put up wet. This California-based trio’s debut full-length, released in 2019, is a scuzzy mixture of garage punk energy, biker rock fuzz, and psyched-out trippiness. A young band (guitarist, vocalist, and chief songwriter is Riley Hawk, son of famous skateboarder Tony Hawk), but the style is old-school, going back to the days of Am Rep noise rock and Sub Pop grunge. Something along the lines of Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney, Cows and Monster Magnet. It’s a tad (pun intended) anachronistic, but ideal if you still want the mindless thrill of some genitals-out, high-octane (weirdo) hard rock without having to rummage around in the dustier end of yer record collection.
