The Rats – “In A Desperate Red ” LP

The Rats were Portland (USA) post-punk legends fronted by the late Fred Cole, best known for Dead Moon, and then more recently Pierced Arrows (with the Defiance/Severed Head Of State drummer, Kelly Halliburton). Originally released in 1983, In A Desperate Red is essentially an earlier version of Dead Moon with a poppier new-wave/art-punk dynamic. Not suprisingly, Wipers are obvious bed-fellows, and I can imagine a young Wayne Cole absorbing this album as an influence for the early Flaming Lips LPs. A true lost masterpiece of early ’80s garage-pop, impossible to find for many years, at last available again with the addition of an impressive 40 page book (thus the high price). “OK, I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say this is just one of the greatest records of all time…. So good, it hurts. Kill me.” – M.R.R.
