Swingin’ Utters – “The Streets Of San Francisco” LP
The debut full-length from the Bay Area’s Swingin’ Utters, repressed on Fat Wreck in 2015 after being out of print on vinyl since New Red Archives first issued it in 1995. The term ‘street punk’ feels somewhat tarnished after the years of countless releases by the likes of Rancid and their various off-shoots, but The Streets Of San Francisco is testament to the fact that even the naffest of sub-genres have their moments of greatness. Like an American sister record to Leatherface’s Mush (imagine a second, Stubbs-like guitar and you’ll figure-out what I mean – the guitarist from the Swingin’ Utters shared much in common with the late Dickie Hammond’s style of guitar playing), this is an up-tempo collection of great punk tunes, containing the right amount of hard-living roughness and roguish charm.
