Stick In The Wheel – “A Thousand Pokes” LP
The fourth studio album by the London folk band. A modern take on an old, traditional style, acknowledging past, present and future. I like Stick In The Wheel even more for the rough-edged social commentary and spikey attitude that lies within the darkened heart and soul of their music (I don’t think a Billy Bragg reference will be at all helpful… and yet, there is at least one mention of union membership on this album). The use of a very broad cockney accent helps immensely. The antithesis of the cloying pastural niceness that mars so many of their contemporaries in the folk world. They got urban grit and inner city bile. I’m not sure if it’s folk played by punks (cause I don’t know band member’s musical backgrounds) but I do know that they play folk music that will connect with punks.
