Description
Shakti – Self-titled LP
Modern punk from the global village that is near impossible to pigeonhole, and all the better for it. With a heritage born from India, but, intriguingly, by way of Barcelona, sucking-up and regurgitating a rich mix of cultural influences, not least 80’s post-punk (especially in the bouncy, dance orientated basslines), 80’s outsider hardcore, and some Crass/Rudimentary Peni anarcho, as well. But add to all of that Indian and Hindu cultural references, plus vocals that are growled, shouted and sung in the Marathi language, and you have yourselves something way outside of the Western, punk-bubble norm. Which, needless to say, is a good thing, and for enthusiasts of interesting outsider/fringe musical exploration this is goddamn, muthafuckin’ essential.
