Shades Apart “Save It.” LP

The second full-length album by the New Jersey hardcore band that were ridiculously ahead of their time. Hard-edged, melody-driven punk rock, that was similar to Moving Targets and the Lemonheads, but also, beefed-up with extra hardcore proteins – afterall, the debut album from 1988 was released on Uniform Choice’s record label, Wishing Well. Catching the ear of Descendents’ Bill Stevenson, the band jumped at the chance of recording with him (along with bandmate Stephen Egerton) and 1995’s “Save It.” was the highly successful product of that union. It’s striking, hearing it again all these years later, how Mark Vecchiarelli’s vocals bare such heavy similarity to Kurt Cobain’s… but, considering how far back into the 1980’s the history of Shades Apart stretches, you have to wonder: coincidence? or, who was influencing who?
