Rudimentary Peni – “Cacophony” CD
A repress of the second album by the Hertfordshire trio of outsider punks that was originally released in 1988 on their own label, Outer Himalayan Records.
The legendary status of these highly creative anarcho punks was already well established by the mid 1980s, and after five mysterious years of silence the anticipation for a new recording was immense – literally, I can remember it, conversations at the bar, conversations in the street, asking anyone who might know anything about it – when will it be out? what the hell will it sound like? Emerging, finally: thirty songs all centered around the theme of HP Lovecraft and his Cthulhu mythos! An utterly bonkers concept album. And fucking fantastic it was. And still is. Recorded at Southern Studios, giving the band free reign to pursue their gothic horror descent into a crazed psyche (both Lovecraft’s and Blinko’s). Musically shifting beyond conventional punk, with wild experimentation that centered around Nick Blinko’s demented vocal ideas, backed as always by the super-tight rhythm section of Grant Matthews and Jon Grevill. A maddening masterpiece brilliantly brought back to life by the dependable Sealed label, complete with reproduction of the all-important 8-page lyric booklet.
