Rodan – “Rodan The Hat Factory 93” LP
Newly discovered tapes from the Hat Factory in Baltimore, the studio where Rodan recorded early versions of the songs that would comprise the full-length, Rusty, released by Quarter Stick in 1994. The first four tracks on this disc were recorded again in late 1993 by Bob Weston, making up the bulk of Rusty. The fifth track, “Exoskeleton”, appeared previously on the How the Winter Was Passed 7″ (released by Three Little Girls Records). As great a recording that Rusty is – and at this point in time you’re more likely to find me listening to that album than, say, Spiderland – these versions, to my amazement, are better; the studio sound, the energy, the different compositional structure of the songs, all make for a very striking contrast to the recordings done half a year later for Rusty. If you think to yourself, I have the original album, I don’t need this version – think again, you’re going to be surprised…
