Defeater play an emotional, heavy, melodic style of hardcore with boundless energy, and sit comfortably alongside other Boston bands like Modern Life Is War and Have Heart. But it is the lryics, and the concept behind them, that really sets Deafeater apart from their peers. Bizarre as it sounds, they get as close to the tradition of the Great American Novel as any other band that I can think of, whether hardcore, alternative or indie.
