Pig Pen – “Mental Madness” LP
The debut recording for this US hardcore band that brings together long time friends with an interesting collection of back stories and past band membership (Alexisonfire, Doom’s Children, Daniel Romano’s Outfit and Young Guv) but almost due to the vocalist Matty Matheson who is now known best known as an actor (primarily The Bear) as well as becoming a chef and restaurateur. The pace and the overriding vibe is straight up hardcore punk, but not in an obvious way, and by no means are they an obvious Flatspot band either. At times there are elements that almost sound t like things are going to tip over into noise-rock/post metal territory – although they don’t, but it does make for an interesting tension, and helps separate Pig Pen from the pack. This is the gold nugget vinyl version, exclusive to Revelation Records and limited to 300 copies.
