OCEANSIZE – “Effloresce” Double LP

These Manchester-based indie-prog-rockers passed me by during their tenure though the 1990s into the 2000s – I knew of their ties to Biffy Clyro, albeit indirect, which dampened my curiosisty to check ’em out. But that changed years later, I think in part due to being really enthusiastic about USA Nails, again, another indirect connection – and on closer inspection of Oceansize’s back catalogue there was less of the Muse/Radiohead ‘prog’ that I feared, and instead I found a joyful tangle of math-rock, space rock and post rock. And heaviness, often just waiting around the corner. All performed with a level of musicianship that makes you want to clench your fists and groan with envy. And most exciting of all, a dollop of influence was drawn from the Cardiacs – and you can certainly tell: blasts of over the top grandeur, quirky melodies, and complex, unconventional time signatures. (the late, great Tim Smith produced their Relapse EP of 2002). Effloresce is their debut album, released in 2003, on Beggars Banquet. Should be the 2017 reissue on red/yellow swirl vinyl (blame Discogs if it isn’t).
